I Miss You Most of All : Blackberries

"Autumnal Gold"
Blackberry hedgerow in Autumn Golds.
Original watercolour.

" And I miss you most of all, my darling, when Autumn leaves start to fall "

Out of the blue it came.  A huge sadness from the hole in my heart that still hasn't healed from losing my four legged best friend Bailey, who passed away almost a year ago. The anniversary of parting with him is not far away and I am telling myself to pull myself together but it isn't easy. Because now is my favourite time of year. I loved walking with him first thing in the morning, to gather blackberries to bring home for jam making. And to enjoy other delicious delights from cooking with freshly harvested fruit from the countryside.

I would leap out of bed each day, race downstairs to be bowled over by my huge hairy mutt before heading off to the woodlands, fields or deserted country lanes that we both loved exploring. Something the two of us did whilst the world was sleeping. The silence only broken by bird song , mainly from the sweetest robin that seemed to greet us and follow us for part of our ramble.

Bailey will always be on  my mind whenever I paint scenes from our  daily adventures which is why this morning a few tears fell before I could stop them. I miss him so much.  But life goes on and here I am in my studio. I have been here since very early this morning as I left my painting haven with so many gorgeous works from my new book to be completed for the final chapters. Everything looks so beautiful that walking into my studio today was sheer bliss. My heart raced looking at my new horse racing scenes which are full of  dramatic colour and action. And there are soft ethereal roses in watercolour near the studio space set by for my work which is to be framed or mounted.

On my easel are a vibrant collection of autumnal paintings. My favourite shade, Quinachridone Gold stands out in all of them. I use Daniel Smith "Quin Gold" as I believe it is the best on the market and it always gives any painting a fabulous instant boost of liquid warmth.

This blackberry painting on my easel was inspired by one of my UK workshops last year. Seen below on my easel. I asked everyone on my course to go outside and collect foliage or berries from the hedgerow to paint. And following my demonstration we worked really hard bringing the treasures to life in watercolour. But I have changed as an artist since then. I now have so much more to share and I cannot wait for my workshops to commence this Fall in USA and next year in UK.
And my new book happily will include all my new colour suggestions and ideas for bringing a subject to life in this wonderful medium that I never tire of using.

Autumnal Glow on my easel as a work in progress.

I miss Bailey but painting  is bringing back sweet memories of our time together. And I can't help thinking of that famous song.

"Autumn Leaves".

I do miss you most of all Bailey, when Autumn Leaves start to fall.

Race Against Time : Gallery Collection

" Race Against Time"
Close up of a new painting

There is no way I can leave my favourite subject of horse racing scenes for far too long. And I seem to paint them with a stronger sense of action when I am raced for time, meeting deadlines. Right now I have so much on but having been contacted by several new galleries recently who wish to represent me the urge to "get back in the saddle" with a favourite subject and paint a whole new collection using my new techniques and colours . That urge is too hard to ignore.

I have changed in style. I do constantly which is natural as an artist grows and their work evolves. Some of my work is soft and ethereal, other work is bold and daring.  It really depends on the chosen subject in which form of colour I will use or indeed its' application.  Lately I have been experimenting with colour application on paper. Preparing the surface using many forms of products and liquids other than water. I am really excited with this new work because it is extremely bold  and does carry an energy. A sense of drama that is lost when the images are shared on line.
The colours are loud. The action undeniable.

 Bold and dramatic colour application

I am sitting here thinking of all the times in the past I have heard comments such as " I don't like using watercolour because it is so " wishy washy" "

Seriously?

Watercolour is the most magical of mediums when handled with respect for what it can do as a medium. It doesn't have to be pale and insignificant. It can sing as loudly and as beautifully, if not more so, than any other medium. But then I am biased!

My new horse racing collection isn't ready to go on show yet. But when it is I will be sharing where it can be viewed. For now I am racing against time trying to complete my book before I leave for USA this Autumn, and looking forward to my solo exhibition which opens this Friday in Hampshire , U.K.  .

Dancing Anemone in Watercolour

  "Dancing Anemone"

Yesterday was one of those late Summer days when you know you simply must paint in your garden. There are a million other things I should have been doing but days like this in England are far too good to waste by spending them indoors. A cluster of Japanese Anemones are growing by my studio door and I have to walk past them each day to get inside to write my new book. Each day I have looked at these flowers dancing in the breeze and I have desperately wanted to paint them. I promised myself that before they were past their best, in their flowering season, I would aim to capture them in watercolour and yesterday I kept my promise.

Japanese anemone flowering outside my studio.

First stages of my anemone painting.

I started by just sitting, studying the real flowers in front of me. Then I began by placing centres using Cadmium Yellow and Cobalt Turquoise to form a lime green mix, but I allowed these shades to merge on paper, not in my palette. Next I painted the petals which are not pink. They have tinges of soft violet in them so although Opera Pink was my favourite choice of colour to use I added touches of violet to tone down the vibrancy of the pink which on its' own looked ineffective.

Once the flowers were in place generally I could then add detail for the petal edges. At this stage the painting looked so pretty and almost good enough to leave as it was.

Adding detail to define the petals of my flowers I bring my subject to life.

The sky above me was so blue without a cloud in sight. And these blousy flowers looked as though they could sit beautifully in a blue background. So I added one using a mix of Cobalt Turquoise  and more Opera Pink.   My painting at this stage looks like the image seen below..

" Dancing Anemone"

Now I have a choice to make. Leave my painting as it is and start a new one. Or add the green foliage. I could add the buds or  spent flower heads also. For now I will enjoy the moment of looking back at this painting, thinking of the butterflies that hovered near me, and at one point landing on my painting while I was working. I listened to birdsong and felt sunshine on my shoulders. I was at peace. Painting cleanses the soul after a busy week, or stressful period in your life. For me this was sheer heaven.

And I can't wait to paint again today!

" A Summers Day" Solo Exhibition, 1st September 2018

" A Summers Day"  .
 H72 x 82cms
£725
( Watercolour and fine gold leaf )

All summer I have watched butterflies dancing in our cottage garden. I have sat and painted them as they hovered over all the flowers but the sight that mesmerised me most of all this year was the carpet of wild ox-eye daisies growing in the woodland section of the garden. They attracted so many gorgeous varieties of butterflies. I took endless photographs of them and I painted as many as I could.

I love the above painting as I was sat with sunshine playing on my shoulders as I worked. The butterflies seemed so carefree. They flitted gently around each new flower, stopping now and then but only briefly as they quickly moved on each time to somewhere new.

It dawned on me how magical butterflies are and how they represent life in so many ways. We are here on earth briefly and we too should enjoy as much as possible whilst we have the opportunity.
So if the sunshines enjoy it whilst you can.
And if you are fit enough to dance, dance.
There will be times ahead when you may wish that you hadn't wasted so many opportunities that came your way.

I've called this piece " A Summers Day" and it will form part of my new collection on show at
The Frame Gallery in my solo exhibition
" A Brush With a Woman"
which opens next Friday night 1st September 2018,  from 5.30 to 8.30p.m. ,
with a preview event that everyone is welcome to attend.

Full details about my exhibition can be found directly from the gallery web site via this link.

UK Watercolour Workshops 2018 : Wait List now open for places.

 Blue Tit in Flight
Work in progress

UK WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOPS 2018

A week ago I released the dates for my UK inspirational watercolour workshops and requests for places came in so fast that I am now sold out.  At this moment, to be fair, I have one place available on a one day workshop and it will be given to the first person who contacts me who wishes to book it.

I will not be adding any more courses next year as I have a book launch and two USA tours plus I will be working on another publication, plus exhibiting in the galleries who represent me.  I start 2018 by filming four new DVDs, for ArtistNetworkTV.com so I will be really busy. In fact typing everything I am doing is pretty frightening! But very exciting at the same time.

I have been asked many times why my workshops sell out so quickly. I like to think it is because of their nature. They are highly motivational, inspirational and unique to each artist who attends them. But I also think one of the nices things about my courses in UK is that I can restrict the number of places to just twelve artists in each session. Which gives me time to work personally with everyone, offering guidance on one to one levels at times. This personal time can be lost in larger groups.

I have never taught for financial reasons. I teach because I adore teaching and I want others dreams to come true, in that they reach a level as an artist that makes them happy. What better way to spend your life than  aiming to make others happy?

I took a year off from teaching  in UK this year because I felt I needed more input personally. So that my future courses have more in them More  in technique, subject and style. I have explored new products, had a blast experimenting and I am eager to share the knowledge I have gained from my break and from my experiences teaching in other countries.

I have also been asked how long am I going to teach for?

Honestly?

I don't know.

But I do know each year I want my workshops to get better and better.

And next year they will be the best yet!

If you feel you have missed out please don't worry. Although the 2018 workshops are sold out I am only just opening the wait lists for each course so your name will be high at the top should any cancellations occur. If you think next year you would like to come on one of my courses , simply contact me now by email. You don't have to do a thing other than choose a workshop and hope a place comes up later on.

Email me on jeanhaines@hotmail.com

And to everyone who so eagerly contacted me already to join me on my UK workshops next year. Thank you so much. You will receive a full material list nearer the course date along with accommodation suggestions in case you need them. And I look forward to meeting you and painting with you in person next year!

"I Can't" I said.

Blue Tit in Watercolour

This afternoon I had a wonderful message from the owner of The Frame Gallery who are hosting my solo exhibition which opens on 1st September  , next month.  Apparently everyone loves the blue tit painting on the Preview Invitation  for my show. So much so, that several people wish to buy it. It has however already been reserved. Collectors often do this to ensure they get the piece they wish to purchase.

I loved reading the gallery message and smiled when I was asked
" Do you have any other Blue Tit paintings ?"
"If you haven't, is there any chance that you can paint another?"

" I can't " was my reply.

Don't you just detest those words the minute you have said them.

And I don't even believe in the two words

" I can't".

I tell everyone who comes on my workshops that they can because I believe negativity can pull us down. Knocking our faith  in our own ability.

But I can't  paint another bird in time because I have deadlines to meet for magazine features, and my new book to work on and I have to prepare for my upcoming USA tour.

" I can't" I thought to myself.

But then on a branch outside my studio a tiny bird sat looking at me.

" You can" it seemed to say.

I tried to ignore it. But it put its' head on one side and looked at me again.

" You can"

Perhaps five minutes just painting it, I thought ,would be a welcome break as today has been so busy.

I grabbed my paper and almost willed the little bird to sit still for me.  Its' little  feathers lifted in the breeze. It flew away at one point but then came back. As if to see how far I had gone with my painting of it and I laughed. I must admit I don't sit still for long either so I didn't mind their brief flight.

Actually I have thought about it.

I can!

So there might be another Blue Tit painting in my solo show but you will only know if you are there!

Its' always best to believe " we can" and in this case I can honestly say a little bird told me so!

UK Watercolour Workshops 2018 : Update

"Colours of a workshop "

UK Watercolour Workshops 2018
  Almost sold out!

I am slowly coming up for air after handling all the email requests for places on my workshops in 2018.  I am only running a limited number of courses because I too want to paint and enjoy creating, as well as teaching.  I announced the 2018 dates were available last Thursday evening. Emails have flooded in so a huge thank you to everyone who has been so prompt in getting in touch with me. I have been very fair and contacted everyone in the order that I received the emails and requests for places. So everyone who has been in touch with me should now have seen my workshop programme or been signed up for a place on next years schedule.

Please note :  If you haven't heard from me by now please get in touch.

Frighteningly, there are now only a few places available on next years workshops in UK.
Please, if you are interested in attending any of my courses and haven't as yet emailed me, could you get in touch with me as soon as possible.

Contact me on jeanhaines@hotmail.com
Title your email :  UK Workshops  2018

A few tips for next year .

1) If you do come on my courses , anywhere , please don't wear white and if you do please don't stand next to me when I am demonstrating. I am getting messier by the minute when I paint!

2) Do try to ensure you have some free time when you leave for home after the courses. So that you can paint using all the information absorbed, and at your leisure .  Trust me, you will want to be painting and how!

3) Many people make life long friends on my courses. Such is the dynamics of the groups. Even if you don't think you will. The courses are friendly, inspirational and motivational. And intended to be so.

4) I live in what is called Jane Austen country. Hampshire , UK . Non painting partners find  quite a lot to see and do.

5) I'm addicted to so many new colours and products so you will possibly fall in love with many new ideas, but that's a good  thing.  We can't stay the same when we paint!

Crazy: A different day.

"Grumpy Babes"
Swallow chicks in our carport from this year.

Today probably proves just how crazy I can be but it was not the day I had planned. I headed to my studio first thing this morning to work on all the emails I have received enquiring after my 2018 Workshop programme which I have to admit is almost fully booked already. I had then hoped to work on my book. But my husband came into my studio and told me I should check the garage to see what had happened. I dreaded the sight when he explained what it would be.

Each year we have enjoyed watching swallows return to nest in our car port. We patiently move our cars out of the car port each year so that the swallows may nest without us disturbing them or them making a mess on our cars. When the last of the fledglings has learnt to fly we happily move our cars back in the car port. The swallows have had two broods this year and as we thought they had finished nesting for the season we moved the cars in yet again. But lo and behold more nesting seemed to continue and we recently again moved the cars out of the car port.

And so, I have been watching the parents fly in and out of the new nest  and I have been eagerly waiting for the latest young family to show their tiny heads, eagerly waiting to be fed. Its actually the first thing I do every morning, check to see if all is okay. But this morning I raced to my studio first and missed the awful sight that was awaiting me.

Magpies have been attacking these beautiful birds all year but the swallow parents seemed to have always won and protected their young. Not so today. Their nest was completely destroyed and tiny bodies of their chicks were lain all over the garage floor. I was heartbroken. I gently picked each little cold form up and checked to see if there was any life in it but no.  I could feel tears welling up because I adore these additional wildlife family members each year.  But then something happened as I held the last but one chick. I held it in my hands for a while. And I thought I would try something completely stupid. before I knew what I was doing I held the little bird to my mouth and I breathed warm air into its beak. I know. I am nuts. But I just couldn't bear to see these poor little things lose their lives so horribly. I know nature is cruel but not on my watch it isn't. Believe it or not, the little birds tummy moved. I breathed into its beak gently again and there was a flicker of life.  I wasn't mistaken. It was so cold but it was breathing. I quickly tried the same trick on the last little chick and that too started breathing again. I carried both the chicks inside, wrapped them snuggly as if they were still in a nest and gave them some fluids, then let them rest in the warm.

 Shocked but recovering. Baby swallows

I raced outside to see if the parents were in sight but no. They hadn't been all day. I then doubled checked all the other little birds but they really had lost the fight. So now I had two little chicks, no parents to look after them.  Great. What now? My husband John was out. So here I was carrying a little make shift nest around trying to keep the chicks warm as I then started phoning around to see where I could get help. Our vet gave me the number of a wildlife centre and John kindly drove me there late afternoon where we were assured the chicks stood a really good chance of surviving. I am thrilled because I love our swallows so much and at least I felt I had helped.

Coming around and wanting to be fed.

We returned home and I have continued to look to see if the parents have returned. As yet there is no sign of them. I have been told once a nest is destroyed the parents rarely  return.

What a day, I am exhausted from trying to keep up with all my emails, write and rescue.

But I can honestly say I have never given a baby bird the kiss of life before. And perhaps I shouldn't be telling anyone that I did.

But isn't this a nice change from all my art posts?

Perhaps there is a lesson to be learned.
Perhaps when you walk into a hopeless situation you should never give up.
Perhaps a miracle can happen.

This is how I found one of the tiny birds.
Cold and lifeless.
But it has a chance now.

I didn't give up.

A Brush With a Woman : Solo Exhibition Opening September 1st, 2018

Framed Owl watercolour from the new collection
To be on show in my solo exhibition in September 2018

My collection of  new watercolours have returned from the framers and were all beautifully wrapped  for transporting to my studio. Today was the day I had planned to get to work unwrapping each piece, measuring, pricing and ensuring the titles were all listed in preparation for my solo show.

I often think we walk into galleries to admire art whilst the work  behind the scenes is really what needs admiration. Months of  creating are what forms the basis for a collection. Then the framing choices for each piece has to be right. In most of my shows all my paintings are usually presented in white wooden frames which show off the freshness of watercolour as a medium. But  I feel certain subjects demand far more from a frame. The above owl painting I know is one of my favourite paintings to date. The eye is special. Wildlife quite often looks wonderful in wood or darker frames and this piece was sheer joy to unwrap this morning. It looks stunning in our home so part of me is already thinking " keep it!".  But it will go in the exhibition as it has been used on the gallery invitation and been included in promotional features.

When I looked at all the wrapped paintings this morning my heart sank a little as the sun was shining outside and I would have loved to have worked in my garden. I also know tomorrow I will be sat at my computer  for most of the day working through the many emails I have received  asking about my UK workshops next year. Today I had no time to go through them and I know I have promised to reply to everyone on Monday, tomorrow.

So I reluctantly got on with my task of carrying each painting to be unwrapped, measured, priced and then re wrapped ready for the show. Soon I was feeling that heady excitement an artist often feels when they see their collection together. It does look  so beautiful and there are many " favourite pieces" in the collection. I will give a few sneak previews on my blog over the next few days, as time allows, for those who can't get to the gallery.

For now, just a few more paintings need to be unwrapped. A job well worth doing and I cannot wait for the 1st September when the collection will  be on show for the first time.

If you would like to come, meet me or have a book signed I will be at the gallery on the evening of Friday 1st September from 5.30 -8.00 p.m . I will also be at the gallery on Saturday morning 2nd September. for a coffee morning so everyone is welcome !

Here is a link to the gallery, please contact them for full information regarding the show or for your invitation to the Friday Preview event.

Almost finished! Checking frames of paintings for my solo show

UK Watercolour Workshops 2018 : How To Book

My Cottage Garden
Hard work but so worth it!

UK WATERCOLOUR WORKSHOPS 2018
Open for booking now!

Following on from my last blog post I would like to explain how booking for my UK Watercolour Workshops is working this year.  In the past, I had a fabulous PA, Christine, who kindly sent out  my UK workshop programmes to everyone who was on my email contact list. Christine retired last year but we both realised that places on my courses were sold out long before I even had the chance to advertise them.  Because of this situation I have been inundated with emails over the last few years from artists and newcomers to my work asking me "How on earth do people get a place on your workshops?" There has even been a joke recently that getting a place on my workshops is similar to getting tickets at Glastonbury, such is their popularity!

It is true my courses in the past have sold out the minute dates have been announced. I do put my all into each course and I'm not happy unless everyone attending has left feeling 100% inspired from my sessions.

But this year I am doing things very differently. To give everyone a fair chance at getting a place I have told everyone to keep en eye on my blog for  UK workshop announcements. The programme of 2018 courses has now been formed and is ready to be sent out to anyone who is interested in coming to one of my courses. If you are reading this you are among the first this week to hear about my next years programme.  But I have already been inundated with messages and as I am handling the bookings personally it is taking me time to even forward the workshop list and from Monday next week I will have contacted everyone who has contacted me so far.

How to find out what courses are available?
There are a limited number of two day and one day courses available in 2018 in April, May and August. Because I travel for my international courses and exhibit , my time to teach in UK is now getting less each year.
 Email me as on jeanhaines@hotmail.com
You will be sent a workshop list with all the information you need on courses, dates, fees and location.

How do I select a course?
Choose a course that appeals to you most of all. But bear in mind all are intended to be exciting, highly inspirational and motivational.

What level of artist do I have to be to come?
My workshops appeal to everyone. I have many professional artists come to me because they have lost the buzz when they paint. All their enthusiasm has been lost so I give them a boost, a renewed energy bringing back the joy in their approach to painting. Beginners come too and they love being introduced to the fantastic world that is watercolour. So everyone is welcome but do mention when you book a course if you are new to painting, as it will help me guide you to your best workshop selection choice.

Should I be nervous?
Absolutely NOT!
If you come on one of my courses in minutes you will be at ease and I can safely say that I'll help you relax and love painting.

How do I pay ?
Once you have selected your  workshop you will be sent a second  email with paying options and only when this  payment has been cleared your course  and place is confirmed.

Cancellation Fee and Refund Policy
Please read this carefully if you are thinking of booking a course.  In the past I have been really generous by either not having a cancellation fee or refund policy in place but it hasn't worked for several reasons. Full details are now given at the time of booking.

So next week I will be contacting everyone who has already got in touch or who is still to contact me.

Stage 1. Email me for course details
Stage 2. Email me your workshop choice
Stage 3. Pay to confirm your booking.

As simple  as one,two,three!

So if you haven't contacted me already, please do so now!
